Most lubricating substances work primarily on the surface. When applied to the skin, they create a protective layer that limits water evaporation.
Lanolin also exhibits an occlusive effect, but its mechanism of action is much more complex.
Studies indicate that the components of lanolin have the ability to integrate with the lipids of the stratum corneum. Thanks to this, they not only limit moisture loss but also support the reconstruction of the skin’s natural protective barrier.
This is an incredibly important difference. In the case of classic occlusion, the protective effect lasts mainly as long as the substance remains on the surface of the skin. Lanolin, however, also works by supporting the structures responsible for the proper functioning of the epidermal barrier.
For this reason, it has been recognized for many years as one of the most effective emollients used in cosmetology and dermatology.
